DESIGN GUIDELINES FOR CFRP STRENGTHENED THIN-WALLED LIPPED CHANNELS- EUROCODE SPECIFICATIONS

Abstract

This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation on the carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) strengthened cold formed steel lipped channel columns. The experimental program consisted of 12 plain cold formed steel section and 12 CFRP strengthened lipped channel section. The variables investigated in this study included the three groups of cross sections with lengths of 400 mm and 500 mm. In each group, two column taken as a plain cold formed section and the remaining two columns were strengthened using CFRP. To control web buckling one side of the web strengthened using one layer of CFRP and then tested using compression testing machine to investigate ultimate capacity under pure axial compression. The test results indicated that contribution of externally bonded CFRP increases overall strength around 9 percent. The proposed design equations show good correlation with experimental results and provided conservative estimates.
