PLANNING ROADWORKS TO MINIMIZE THE TRAVEL DELAY OF ROAD USERS

Abstract

The lane-closures made by roadworks bring a considerable travel delay time of road users. For a construction project that has several work zones and several work crews, the travel delay time can be improved by scheduling. Based on the route-changing behavior of road users, this paper proposes a scheduling model. The model calculates the travel delay of vehicles by microscopic simulation, and applies ant colony optimization (ACO) to search a near-optimal schedule. The project planner can command the contractor’s work crews to execute the activities according to the near-optimal schedule.
