DUCTILITY PERFORMANCE OF PRECAST CONCRETE BEAM CONFINED BY NYLON MESH

Abstract

Ductility is the main concern in concrete earthquake resistant design. It is proven that confinement will increase ductility performance of concrete beam and give advantage of safety aspect in saving life. Some various type of confinements made of many types of materials have been derived to improve concrete beam ductility. Previous research has proven that nylon mesh confinement significantly improved the ductility of concrete slim beams. In this research the nylon mesh is applied to precast concrete beam and investigated for its ductility performance. This research was conducted by full-scale laboratory experiment. The specimens consist of three precast beams which are unconfined and confined by nylon mesh, with dimension of  250x350x3500 mm and f’c design  =  40 MPa.The specimens consists of one unconfined precast beam and 2 confined precast beams. The confinement made of nylon mesh with mesh spacing of 2.5 cm. The specimens are tested by third point flexural beam test by loading frame and data logger of strain gauges. This paper meets conclusions:  (1) Precast beams with nylon mesh confinement shows more ductile behaviour compared to precast beam without confinement. The ultimate load of precast beams confined by nylon mesh increases 23-47% and displacement increases 52-70% compared to the specimen without confinement; (2) The curvature of ductility ratio of specimen confinement A and B are about 35-50%  higher  than  specimen  without  confinement.  The  curvature  of  precast  beams  with confinement A and B are 57-78.6% higher compared to precast beam without confinement. The rotation of precast beams with confinement A and B are 77.5-83.5% higher than precast beam without specimen; and (3) It is proven that nylon mesh confinement improves the ductility of precast concrete beam.
