THE DEVELOPMENT OF GREEN STRUCTURAL CONCRETE IN INDONESIA

Abstract

The structural concrete which had been used in Indonesian construction industries, aren’t yet in touch or bringing into attention the important hot-issues of sustainability and global industrial ecology. No matter how small is the contribution of concrete construction industry in term of quantities of CO2 emission to the earth atmosphere in comparable to other industries such as locomotive, coal, power plant; the US Green Building Council (USGBC) develops the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building rating system for green building concept design. LEED for new construction has credits in basic categories related to the efficiency use of water, energy and atmosphere and materials & resources. Concrete and concrete products can contribute both directly and indirectly towards earning points of LEED rating system. The crucial component in the structural concrete mix-design is closely related to the higher content use of cement per cubic meter of concrete volume since cement has linearly proportion to the CO2 emission to the atmosphere. One ton cement used for structural concrete will bring more or less the same amount of equivalent one ton of CO2 emission to the earth atmosphere. The contribution of this paper was based on the results of literature surveys  and personal limited of success of practical-experience in developing the modification of current concrete mix design to be more durable, workable and higher strength at relatively lower cost but eco-friendly by making effective use of waste resources, less water and cement content use of more than 50 % in comparable to the ordinary Portland cement concrete. Concrete industry is a large consumer of cement -a manufactured product that is directly responsible for high CO2 emissions and huge amount used of natural resources, such as aggregates and water. The structural concrete which had been used in Indonesian construction industries, aren’t yet in touch or bringing into attention the important hot-issues of sustainability and global industrial ecology.
