Abstract

This research reports an investigation into productivity problems on Indonesian construction sites as perceived by Indonesian foremen. Eighty-one foremen drawn from three main trades (31 bricklaying, 27 carpentry, and 23 steelfxing foremen) from 27 projects in high-rise building participated in this study. The foremen were asked to estimate time lost of craftsmen under their span of control. This lost time was estimated with respect to each of the identified productivity problems. Results indicate that craftsmen lose up to 26 percent of their time due to productivity problems, the severity of these productivity problems were then ranked using the basis of time lost. Agreement on productivity problem ranking amongst the three groups of foremen was evaluated using Kendall Concordance analysis. Finding of this survey was also compared with that from a craftsmen survey. Results indicate that main productivity problems are: rework, lack of material, absenteeism, interference, and lack of proper tools.
