HAZARD DISCUSSION on MASONRY ARCH STRUCTURE with JOINTS DAMAGE UNDER VERTICAL LOADING
In the masonry arch structure, the main bearing capacity member is arch ring, which makes full use of compressive performance of masonry material, and prevents to produce the tensile or flexural stress. Nevertheless, many existing historic masonry buildings with arch structures represent mortar joints damage due to physical-chemical action, human destruction or rain-impact erosion. Local joints damage would reduce the integrity of main arch ring, and make many elements in the arch ring have different working state, which changes the working performance of arch such as deflection and stress state. This paper discusses the behavior of masonry arch ring with joints damage under vertical loading using a commercially available finite element package. Qualitative analysis results about joints damage of masonry arch in respect of different location and level are necessary for historic masonry arch structure to be strengthened taking rational measures.
