The Indonesian construction industry has changed remarkably over the years. All of the changes, whether positive or negative, that occurred in the industry have had an effect on the safety of the construction job sites. In fact, some developments have made certain aspects of construction work safer, while also introducing new and even more dangerous hazards. The use of the term “accident” presents some problems in the area of accident prevention. It is commonly associated with the events that are assumed to be out of the control of the persons involved in the construction activity. The construction industry in Indonesia, as a developing country faces a wide range of challenges, one of which is the frequent occurrence of accidents in the work areas. This paper presents results of a research that concentrated on analyzing causes of accidents on construction projects in Indonesia. Using survey method applied to Indonesian construction and secondary data from Uganda, this research also provide pictures regarding causes of accidents, identify the present and potential safety hazards in construction industry and analyze the safety measures used on construction sites in relation to existing safety regulations, design standards and code(s) of practice, and their impact on the safety of workers in both countries.
